Is it time for me to upgrade?

About two weeks ago I decided to buy a new camera from Best Buy to try out. I had a proposal that I was asked to shoot during the first week as well, so I went and got the Canon EOS R. Let me start off by saying that this camera is a tremendous upgrade from my current Canon EOS 80D. The camera is a mirrorless camera and its full-frame with Canon’s new RF lenses. While using it these last two weeks, I’ve come to love this camera and found that it was everything I was looking for in an upgrade. The camera came with a lens as well, the RF 24-105 f/4 IS, which is also very good. I am very happy with the camera so far, so let's jump into some specifics.

My first shoot with the EOS R was the proposal and it handled everything that I threw at it. The 7 FPS were enough for me to capture every moment and the buffer seemed nonexistent. The autofocus was also a big plus and improvement from the EOS 80D. One of the features that I really enjoyed using was the touch and drag, which allows you to use the back LCD to control the autofocus points and quickly adjust it. The EOS R also has 30 megapixels compared to 24.2 in my current camera, which was really useful when I needed to crop some images. The image underneath is from the proposal.

The Canon EOS R is really powerful and being the first mirrorless camera I’ve used, it's been great so far. The image quality is sharp and the colors pop even without edits. I wanted to test the camera in another capacity as well. Previously, I’ve talked about rolling shots with my EOS 80D so I wanted to see how this camera would handle them. And I can say that I am really impressed and pleased with the outcome. The camera had no issues with this shoot as well and I was able to use continuous shooting with no issues. I ended up having 1000+ images by the end of the day and had a lot of fun editing the images once I got home.

If you’re looking for an upgrade to a full-frame camera and want to try a mirrorless camera, I would definitely recommend this camera. My biggest dilemma was choosing between buying this camera or the new Canon EOS R5 which is supposed to be much better. I was leaning towards the EOS R because I feel that the EOS R5 is geared more towards videography and even though it has improved photography functions I didn’t think it was worth the $2000 more since I do not do much videography. I haven’t used the EOS R to shoot that much yet but as I learn more about the camera and its ability, I will release a full review of the camera.
